KENTWOOD, Michigan – History was made Friday night as the Detroit City FC women took the pitch for the first time. After taking a 1-0 lead midway through, DCFC surrendered three unanswered to Midwest United FC at the MUFC CAC South Field in Kentwood, Michigan.
“Obviously not the result we wanted, but overall I feel that we got some good information,” said head coach Sam Piraine. “We wanted to get out there and share different personnel and see what makes the best picture moving forward.”
After a back-and-forth, scoreless opening 45 minutes that saw balanced possession, it was Detroit City that came out of the break on the attack.
“We talked about more ways to create chances at half time,” Piraine said. “One of those things was to create more wide play.”
Playing in the forward third from her position on the backline, Syd Blomquist took a wide ball from midfielder Hannah Becker. Blomquist played it into the box and found the foot of forward Tori Singstock for the first goal in DCFC women’s history.
“We’ve been working on corners and playing wide so I figure I just had to make that back-post run,” said Singstock.
The lead wouldn’t last long, as Midwest United found the equalizer just five minutes later.
Possession began to favor Midwest United throughout the final 35 minutes, as City surrendered another two tallies in a three minute span.
“On the defensive side of the game, I think it was more fatigue,” said Piraine. “The fitness piece you could really see and with that comes mistakes.”
Le Rouge is home next weekend to host the UWS Keyworth Showcase, featuring Midwest United, Lansing United and Livonia FC. City opens the two-day tournament on Friday, July 24, against Lansing United at 7:30 pm.
DCFC is continuing to work with state officials and health experts to determine whether fans will be permitted to attend next week’s Keyworth Showcase. An announcement will be made early in the week.
