DETROIT, Michigan – The inaugural Detroit City FC women’s side takes the pitch for the first time on Friday, July 17, at the UWS Midwest Showcase hosted by Midwest United FC. Match time is set for 7 pm at the Midwest United FC Christian Athletic Complex in Kentwood, Michigan.
To promote the health and safety of supporters, players and staff, fans are asked not to attend Friday’s match, but watch the livestream provided by Midwest United FC at the link above.
The showcase was originally scheduled with four teams, but the competition has been slimmed down to Midwest United hosting Le Rouge on Friday night, with no game on Sunday as announced earlier.
Detroit City FC enters the match with just 18 days of training in the books, having reported for training on June 29.
Head coach Sam Piraine slimmed down the 36-spot roster to 25 for the abbreviated 2020 slate. The roster features an array of experience on the pitch, ranging from international and professional experience to preparing for their first collegiate season.
Defender Sarah Huge was named the first captain of the women’s side on April 29. Huge played collegiate soccer at Michigan State University from 2008- 2011. She has spent the last four years coaching high school and youth soccer and serves on the technical staff for the Salem girls varsity team and DCFC Youth West.
Defenders Meyah Romeo and Syd Blomquist highlighted the initial roster announcements with their time outside the United States. Romeo recently played for the Trinidad and Tobago national team in the 2020 CONCACAF Olympic Qualifiers. Blomquist comes to Detroit having spent time with Sporting Clube de Portugal Feminino. The Baltimore, Maryland, native has had pro stops with Åland United in Finland’s top division – Naisten Liiga – and Västerås BK30 in Sweden. While playing with Vasteras BK30, she was instrumental in helping the team win a league title which promoted the club to the Elitettan for 2017.
Friday’s contest between Detroit City FC and Midwest United is the first of possibly two meetings within 10 days. Midwest United is set to come to Keyworth next week for the UWS Keyworth Showcase from July 24-26. Joining Le Rouge and Midwest United is Livonia City FC and Lansing United. DCFC is continuing to work with state officials and health experts to determine whether fans will be permitted to attend next week’s Keyworth Showcase. An announcement will be made early next week.
