Detroit City FC captured its first win of its professional era on Friday night, recording a 2-0 win on the road against the Los Angeles Force in its 2020 NISA spring season opener.
City picked up all three points in its first professional match in club history, with Matt Lewis and Roddy Green scoring goals in the 22nd minute and 90+ minute, respectively.
Newcomer Kevin Venegas took a free kick at the edge of the LA 18-yard box that found captain Stephen Carroll waiting at the back post. Carroll’s pass across the goal line found Lewis – on loan from New York Cosmos for the 2020 spring season – unmarked and alone in front of goal.
With City off to a roaring start, things settled down in the second half, but Roddy Green hit the dagger late in stoppage time off a winding ball from Bakie Goodman. Goodman’s pass was played through to Green – who entered the match in the 76th minute in replace of Connor Rutz – down the field, and Green took it himself and calmly finished to make it 2-0.
Next up, Detroit hosts Oakland Roots for its 2020 home opener at Keyworth Stadium on Saturday, March 21. Kickoff is at 3 PM.
