Detroit City FC today announced Matt Lewis and Salvatore Barone have joined Le Rouge for the 2020 NISA spring season, on loan from the New York Cosmos.
Before joining the Cosmos for pre-season training in June, Lewis and Barone will be loaned to Detroit City FC for the NISA spring season pending final approval from NISA and USSF. The Cosmos will make their NISA debut in the fall campaign, which starts in August.
Lewis, 23, was one of the standout performers for the Cosmos during the 2019 National Premier Soccer League and NPSL Members Cup seasons. The defender from Kansas City, Missouri, began his professional career in 2018 when he was signed to a homegrown contract with Sporting Kansas City of Major League Soccer (MLS). He played with the club’s United Soccer League (USL) affiliate Swope Park Rangers, where he made 12 league appearances.
Barone, 24, returns for his third season with the Cosmos. The midfielder from Brooklyn, New York, played for St. Francis College during his collegiate years.
Barone and Lewis join former Cosmos teammate Kevin Venegas (D), who was recently announced by the club as a new signing for 2020.
With its opening NISA match on February 28, the City roster is quickly taking shape, with the club announcing the return of Shawn Lawson (F), Cyrus Saydee (M), Bakie Goodman (M), George Chomakov (M), Tendai Jirira (D), Evans Frimpong (D), and Stephen Carroll (D).
