Detroit City FC’s 2020 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup journey begins in April.
The U.S. Soccer Federation has released the format for the 2020 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. With official competition commencing on March 24, 2020, NISA clubs will enter in the second round commencing on April 7, 2020.
This will be DCFC’s fifth U.S. Open Cup appearance, with its last appearance in 2018. The Open Cup, now in its 107th year of existence, has proved memorable for City, who in 2018 defeated the then-Michigan Bucks in penalty kicks at home and took FC Cincinnati to extra time on the road in the second round of action. In 2016, Le Rouge defeated the Bucks in penalty kicks before falling to USL-side Louisville City in penalty kicks in Kentucky.
“This is a great day for the National Independent Soccer Association,” NISA Commissioner John Prutch said. “To be able to compete in the 2020 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, the most prestigious competition the country has to offer, is truly an honor. Our clubs are looking forward to hitting the pitch and representing their communities in an effort to win the Cup.”
Teams from Major League Soccer will enter the competition in the third round.
