The National Premier Soccer League (NPSL) today announced City forward Yazeed Matthews and City goalkeeper Nate Steinwascher were named the 2019 NPSL Members Cup Golden Ball and NPSL Members Cup Golden Glove award winners, respectively.
Matthews earned the Golden Ball after a successful Members Cup campaign, where the South African tallied five goals and one assist in 10 games (eight starts) and 682 minutes of play.
“It’s truly an honor for me to win this award,” Matthews said. “I would like to give thanks to all my teammates, the DCFC staff, and to all our amazing fans.”
Matthews played for Coastal Carolina University from 2017-2018, where he was named to the 2018 All-Sun Belt First Team and awarded Co-Offensive Player of the Year.
Steinwascher was awarded the Golden Glove after a strong Members Cup, where the Sterling Heights, Michigan native posted six clean sheets in 10 games (10 starts) and 862 minutes of play.
“As honored as I am to be accepting this reward, it’s really a testament to the entire team for the season we had,” Steinwascher said. “We stayed organized defensively every single match, and when we won the ball back we were very good at keeping it from our opponent.”
Head coach Trevor James, defender Stephen Carroll, Nate Steinwascher and Yazeed Matthews were named to the 2019 Members Cup XI.
Detroit was crowned champion of the Members Cup, with Trevor James guiding his team to a 8-1-1 record.
