Detroit City FC celebrated an NPSL Members Cup championship on Saturday night, despite suffering a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Milwaukee Torrent. 5,720 City supporters packed the terraces of historic Keyworth Stadium to cheer on the Boys in Rouge one last time in 2019.
It was a heated contest throughout, with both sides picking up a slew of cards (eight in all). Constant fouling and chippiness took a lot of the beauty out of the game, but there was still plenty of action. Milwaukee’s only goal came in the 64th minute, courtesy of a turnover and a perfectly placed cross that Santiago D’Imperio was able to get just enough of.
The late moments of the match were tense and more than a bit wacky. Due to some injury time and other assorted extracurriculars, a total of seven minutes was added on after the 90 had expired. Milwaukee picked up four of their five cards in the 89th minute or later. In the end, Le Rouge couldn’t find the equalizing goal.
In addition to the Members Cup trophy presentation, the winner of Detroit City FC’s Black Arrow MVP Award was announced at the end of the match. 2019’s recipient is Shawn Lawson, who led the team in goals for the season, on his way to taking control of the club record for goals as well.
