Detroit City FC turned the page and started a new chapter on Tuesday night, defeating Windsor TFC by a resounding 6-1 scoreline. 6,083 City supporters rejoiced in the result, despite on-and-off rain throughout the second half at historic Keyworth Stadium.
Man of the Match was split between two DCFC living legends, Dave Edwardson and Seb Harris. It was a class move by Head Coach Trevor James to give the crowd a chance to recognize them both for all they’ve meant to the club over the years. The standing ovation they both received while subbing off was another in a long line of cherished memories shared between the fans and two of their favorites.
Ryan Peterson got the scoring started for Detroit in the 10th minute, and Windsor equalized in the 24th. Between the friendly atmosphere, the shuffled rosters, and the frequent fouling, there wasn’t much to write home about until the clock ticked past the 40th-minute mark.
Edwardson scored what wound up being the game-winning goal in the 41st minute. Rich Bryan played him a beautiful ball that the captain met with his head and powered home. Just three minutes later, Peterson scored his second of the match to send the Boys in Rouge into the locker room with a 3-1 halftime lead.
The second half brought lots of rain, lots of substitutions, and lots of City goals. The annual friendly against Windsor provided the perfect opportunity for Trevor James to assess new players – a group that included Bryan, Peterson, Stephen Kosmala, James Vaughan, Diego Casielles, Esmail Haidan, Evans Frimpong, and Marlon Evans.
The goals, however, came courtesy of a man whose face is familiar to Le Rouge faithful. Shawn Lawson, having checked in after the break, ever so casually netted his second hat trick of the season, with tallies in the 72nd, 77th, and 85th minutes.
The Boys in Rouge go again Tuesday, August 13, when USL Championship side Indy Eleven pay a visit for the clubs’ first-ever meeting. Kickoff is set for 7:30 PM. Tickets for the match are available online for only $12. Come and get yours now.
