Ahead of its 2019 home opener, Detroit City FC is announcing a new fundraising initiative to support water-based efforts in Detroit and across the globe.
For each Detroit City FC home match during the 2019 season, a different international or Detroit-based artist will create an exclusive matchday prints. Only 25 matchday prints will be sold at Keyworth Stadium for $40 each. A limited number will be sold online after each match. The first edition of each print will be auctioned off at the end of the season.
All proceeds from the print will benefit We the People of Detroit, Viva Con Agua, and the artists involved.
We the People of Detroit is a grassroots advocacy organization based in Detroit that was started by five women of color and aims to inform, educate and empower Detroit residents on imperative issues surrounding civil rights, land, water, education, and the democratic process. We the People of Detroit has been a leader in the community in championing Detroiters’ access to safe water.
Viva Con Agua, started in Sankt Pauli, Hamburg, Germany, is a network of people and organizations committed to establishing access to fresh drinking water and basic sanitation for all humans worldwide.
“After last year’s match against Germany’s FC St. Pauli – one of global soccer’s most progressive and socially conscious clubs – some of our supporters suggested we work with their preferred charity partner,” Sean Mann, CEO of DCFC, said. “We were instantly impressed by Viva Con Agua’s passion and work to bring safe water to people across the world. We also felt it was imperative to include a local partner that was affecting change on the crucial issue of access to water in our own community. We couldn’t be more happy to work alongside, and hopefully, promote We the People of Detroit to more engaged citizens in our community.”
“Art can both inspire people around the world and activate them to become part of our global water movement. #artcreateswater” Michael Fritz, founder of Viva Con Aqua.
“Water is a basic need—yet people in Detroit and communities around the country are having their water shut off, seeing their water bills double or triple, and getting tap water contaminated by lead,” said Monica Lewis-Patrick, president and CEO of We the People of Detroit. “That’s not acceptable. We need to make sure that as we are working to protect iconic resources like the Great Lakes, we are also advancing solutions to make sure that that every person in this country has access to clean, safe, affordable drinking water and sanitation, so that we can protect the health of people now and for generations to come.” We the People of Detroit is proud and tremendously grateful to be selected, along with Viva con aqua to partner with Sean Mann, the Detriot City FC Soccer team and the GREAT Fans to support the Human Right to Water and the building of socially just efforts through the international relationships of professional soccer. Go Detriot City!”
The Posters are being printed by Dunwell Dry Goods of Hamtramck, Michigan.
Detroit hosts Kalamazoo FC on Sunday, May 19 for its home opener at 5 PM ET. General admission tickets start at $12 and can be purchased at tickets.https://www.detcityfc.com.
