Detroit City FC is excited to announce its partnership with Global Goals World Cup, a worldwide network of local women’s groups who meet-up to create change through the sport of soccer.
Founded in 2015, the Global Goals World Cup (GGWCup) is the first-ever activist soccer tournament for women that drives awareness about the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), including poverty, hunger, inequality and climate change.
As part of the global initiative, GGWCup has chapters in New York and Copenhagen, with the organization recently launching a chapter in Detroit. Each week, women of all backgrounds and skill levels meet to discuss social impact and play soccer.
Starting in October, GGWCup Detroit meetings will be held at the new Detroit City Fieldhouse. Additionally, members are planning to establish a team in the women’s soccer league at the Fieldhouse on Monday evenings.
“Detroit City FC and Global Goals World Cup share in a commitment to strengthening our local communities with an international outlook,” said Phil Lucas, DCFC Community Liaison. “We are thrilled to join forces and partner with Global Goals World Cup as it continues to empower women and create sustainable impact through sport.”
“We believe sport is a brilliant way to communicate and create change together. When we exchange ideas we learn, we respect, we inspire each other and understand how we are all part of humanity,” said Marie Hansen of GGWCup.
Global Goals World Cup and Detroit City FC believe that a team of dedicated women is one of the most powerful mobilizing activist units in the world.
This year’s Global Goals World Cup tournament will be held in New York on September 25.
The next Detroit – Global Goals World Club meeting is this Thursday, August 30 at 6 PM at Keyworth Stadium. Join the weekly meet-ups here: https://www.meetup.com/pro/global-goals-club.
