Detroit City FC is excited to welcome back Cale Wassermann as associate head coach of Detroit’s soccer team.
Cale previously served as associate head coach alongside former City head coach Kylie Stannard for the club’s inaugural 2012 season at Cass Tech High School.
After five years away from the club for personal and professional obligations, Wassermann returns to his role as associate head coach where he will work alongside head coach Ben Pirmann, whom he also works alongside at Michigan State University.
“It goes without saying that Detroit City FC is a special club that was built from the ground up with tremendous supporters, innovative ownership, and die-hard players,” Wassermann said. “I have stayed connected to the club in various ways since the inaugural season and could not pass up the opportunity to get back on the sidelines with the rouge and gold this summer. I am honored and thankful for this opportunity.”
“We are so thrilled to finally add Cale to the family,” Ben Pirmann said. “Cale was an integral part of the origination of the club back in 2012 and will be so invaluable to City moving forward. He not only has incredible awareness and coaching acumen, but has the passion that this club represents.”
Starting his fourth year at Michigan State University as the recruiting coordinator and assistant coach, the Spartans just finished a stellar year advancing to the NCAA Elite Eight and finishing ranked #6 overall in the country.
Prior to joining the Spartans, Wassermann spent five successful seasons as the head coach of Saginaw Valley State University. While being honored as the 2012 NSCAA National Coach of the Year, the Cardinals captured the program’s first three conference championships and advanced to the 2012 NCAA DII National Championship game. The DCFC-SVSU connection remained solid; while at SVSU, Cale coached several Boys in Rouge, including Zach Myers, Locky Savage, Michael Lamb, Alex Isaevski, Troy Watson, Alexandre Bouillennec, TJ Stephens, Zach Vasold and Tyler Channell.
Wassermann has also had stints as the head coach for the USA Maccabi U18 team where the team captured the 2013 silver medal in Israel, as well as a stop as an assistant at Lewis University where the Flyers made a run to the 2009 NCAA DII Final Four.
