Detroit City FC picked up its sixth consecutive league win on Sunday afternoon on the road defeating Milwaukee Torrent, 2-1.
The comeback win, which pushed Le Rouge (6-2-1, W-T-L) to second place in the NPSL Great Lakes standings with 20 points, was led by goals from Tyrone Mondi and Shawn Lawson.
Lawson’s strike in the 84th minute, his fifth NPSL goal, was the difference maker. Mondi was the man to set him up on a 1v1 situation, and the City forward calmly chipped it past the Milwaukee goalkeeper.
Mondi was named the Man of the Match for his goal and his match-winning assist.
Milwaukee opened the scoring in the 18th minute, when City goalkeeper Colin Miller was beat by the Torrent’s Nemanja Medic.
Le Rouge responded in the 28th minute, when Derrick Otim was played into the box and tripped up, earning a penalty kick for DCFC. Mondi stepped up and placed his PK down the middle to level the match at 1-1.
DCFC dominated the second half, creating several chances up top and thwarting Milwaukee attacks. Kervin Kenton, Owain Hoskins and Stephen Carroll led the backline and shut down the Torrent all match.
Lawson subbed in at the 73rd minute mark, and 11 minutes later, he secured the victory for City.
The win was DCFC’s second of the weekend, after defeating Kalamazoo FC 2-1 at home on Friday night.
Le Rouge returns home this Tuesday, June 27 when it hosts FC Indiana at 7:30 PM. Tickets are available at tickets.https://www.detcityfc.com.
