Detroit City FC hits the road for another crucial National Premier Soccer League battle against Grand Rapids FC this Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. at Fifth Third Ballpark in Comstock Park, MI.
The midseason tilt features third place DCFC (3-2-1, 11 points) and fourth place Grand Rapids (2-1-3, 7 points). A win would advance Detroit’s win-streak to four in the league as well as keep their playoff hopes alive.
The first meeting of the season between the two teams on June 2 resulted in a 3-1 victory for Le Rouge at Keyworth Stadium. This time, in order to complete the regular season sweep, Detroit will need to find that same kind of energy on the road.
Grand Rapids is most recently coming off a 4-2 defeat to Lansing United last Saturday night, while City won its last contest on the road against Kalamazoo FC, 1-0. If Detroit wins, it would be only four points behind second-place Lansing and a playoff spot.
Forward Tyrone Mondi said the team’s strategy going into Saturday is to take it one game at a time. He said it was critical for them to win away at Kalamazoo and will be again going into Grand Rapids this weekend.
“That was a really tough game in terms of the conditions we had,” Mondi said. “But we got the result and it was really pleasing to get the three points.”
In order to make the playoffs, Mondi said every game from now on is a must-win. He said he feeds of the pressure of playing, especially at home, and will use it to improve his play and be an overall team player.
“We just want to focus on every league game one at a time,” Mondi said. “The next one is Grand Rapids away. We just want to win every game from now on. As a player, I want to help the team reach the goal. I want to do anything possible to help the other guys and set them up.”
