After an exciting match celebrating Detroit’s soccer history with Glentoran FC, it’s right back to league play for Detroit City FC this weekend with matches against Grand Rapids FC and FC Indiana.
City is currently 0-2-1 (W-T-L) with two points in the NPSL Great Lakes standings, with its most recent result a 1-0 victory over Glentoran in a friendly match on Saturday night. The team will be looking to take this success into what’s shaping up to be an important weekend series.
It all starts Friday night, June 2nd, at Keyworth Stadium when Le Rouge face Grand Rapids FC, who are off to a 2-1-1 start. Their most recent result was a 2-1 loss at AFC Ann Arbor on Monday.
The two clubs played each other for the first time last summer, meeting twice in the regular season. City lost 5-2 at Grand Rapids and tied, 0-0, at home.
On Sunday, June 4, Le Rouge will travel to Legacy Sports Club in Lafayette, Indiana, to take on FC Indiana at 2 p.m. Indiana is 1-0-2 this season with three points. This will be the first-ever meeting between the two teams.
Ahead of the Glentoran match, City head coach Ben Pirmann said he planned on playing as many players as possible as long as they are healthy. That was indeed the case as 23 players made appearances.
“We’ll get 22 players to play in the game and hopefully correct some things ahead of some league games,” Pirmann said.
Though the match was a friendly, Pirmann used it to correct past mistakes and to figure out the best lineup going into the weekend. After a full week of training, it all kicks off Friday night in Hamtramck.
