It’s that time of year again. Detroit City FC begins their highly anticipated 2017 National Premier Soccer League (NPSL) campaign at Keyworth Stadium this Friday, May 12th, against Milwaukee Torrent at 7:30 p.m.
This will be the first-ever meeting between the two clubs, and DCFC looks to capitalize as Milwaukee travel away for the first time this season. The Torrent lost their first match of the NPSL season last Saturday at home against AFC Ann Arbor, 3-1.
After finishing last season 4-4-4 (W-L-T), Le Rouge look to gain early momentum in the season opener. DCFC finished the preseason 2-0-1, which concluded in a 2-2 draw in front of 4,168 supporters against Dayton Dynamo FC last Saturday night.
Head Coach Ben Pirmann said the preseason performance was solid, featuring several promising newcomers, as well as seasoned veterans. This Friday he’ll be looking for his players to improve in areas they faltered in against the Dynamo.
“All in all it was solid, but we’ve got to make sure we definitely clean some stuff up,” Pirmann said. “Our defensive structure in the second half, our transition and then our build up shape and build up movement weren’t quite good enough.”
Pirmann knows the importance of getting off to a strong start in the NPSL, and said after a full week of training, the players should be better acquainted with each other’s play.
“Training was good,” Pirmann said. “We moved in a lot more guys tonight and played some guys who were still getting to know each other. We just have to keep training. Friday is a big night.”
Following Friday’s match, Le Rouge visit a more familiar conference foe, Michigan Stars FC. The match will take place at Hurley Field in Berkley, Mich., this Sunday, May 14th, at 4 p.m.
