Detroit City FC wrapped up its 2017 preseason Saturday night at Keyworth Stadium with a 2-2 draw against Dayton Dynamo in front of 4,168 supporters.
Prior to Saturday’s preseason finale, City secured wins over Saginaw Valley State University (3-1) and Lawrence Technological University (2-0). Le Rouge ended its preseason with a record of 2-0-1 (W-L-T).
Returning for his sixth season, Cyrus Saydee was as consistent as ever in the midfield, tallying one goal in each match and earning Man of the Match honors against LTU and Dayton.
New faces were added to City’s preseason rosters as players arrived in Detroit, giving head coach Ben Pirmann room to experiment with lineups.
Against Dayton, Bakie Goodman (Georgetown), Derrick Otim (Xavier), Zach Bock (Western Michigan) and Kervin Kenton (Coastal Carolina) made their City debuts.
Shawn Lawson (Oakland), Stephen Carroll (Davenport), Roddy Green (SVSU) made their debuts against LTU, and Jordan Tyler (Penn State) started his first Le Rouge match at SVSU on April 15.
On top of Saydee’s tally, last year’s Black Arrow MVP, Tommy Catalano, and Jeff Adkins netted a goal each at SVSU. With his goal and two assist, Adkins earned himself Man of the Match honors.
At LTU on April 30, Green sealed his first City goal in the 2-0 win.
City Starting XI vs. SVSU on 4/15: Steinwascher, Schewee, Harris, Ankoviak, Watson, Chomakov, Edwardson, Adkins, Catalano, Tyler.
City Starting XI vs. LTU on 4/30: Steinwascher, Harris, Watson, Schewee, Spinks, Edwardson, Chomakov, Saydee, Adkins, Tyler, Catalano
City Starting XI vs. Dayton on 5/6: Steinwascher, Carroll, Adkins, Saydee, Watson, Goodman, Bock, Edwardson, Green, Schewee, Tyler
After Saturday’s match against Dayton, Pirmann praised his team’s first-half play, but expressed areas of focus as all eyes turn to Friday’s league opener against Milwaukee Torrent at Keyworth Stadium.
“All in all it was solid, but we’ve got to make sure we definitely clean some stuff up,” Pirmann said. “Our defensive structure in the second half, our transition and then our build up shape and build up movement weren’t quite good enough.”
