City soccer is back.
Detroit City FC opened its 2017 preseason with a 3-1 away victory against Saginaw Valley State University men’s soccer on Saturday afternoon.
Cyrus Saydee opened the scoring in the eighth minute, with goals from Jeff Adkins and last year’s Black Arrow MVP, Tommy Catalano, the early tally.
Adkins had a hand in three of DCFC’s goals, with a goal and two assists, and was named the Man of the Match.
Head coach Ben Pirmann, who enters his fifth season with Le Rouge, had most of his veteran players see action in the friendly, with a few players joining the team on a trial basis.
Saydee, who has been with City since 2012, gave DCFC a 1-0 lead after collecting a through-ball from Jeff Adkins and maneuvering around SVSU’s goalkeeper for an easy tap-in.
After holding onto its 1-0 lead through halftime, Saydee was brought down in the box after making a darting run toward goal, and he was awarded a penalty kick.
Adkins, who joined City in 2013, stepped up to take the PK, and calmly placed it past the diving SVSU goalkeeper and into the bottom left corner to give DCFC a 2-0 lead in the 56th minute.
After Saginaw’s Alberto Gangutia – who featured on City’s roster in 2016 – converted a penalty kick in the 82nd minute to cut the lead to 2-1, Tommy Catalano answered in the 85th minute.
Adkins’ delivered a cross into the middle of the SVSU box and right to Catalano’s feet, giving the striker an easy look on goal that he didn’t miss.
