In support of refugees’ basic human rights and dignity, Detroit City FC today announced it will be donating 10 percent of season ticket sales through February 8 to Freedom House Detroit, a Detroit-based nonprofit organization that assists individuals fleeing persecution from around the world.
A temporary haven for survivors of persecution, conflict and turmoil in their home countries for more than 30 years, Freedom House Detroit recently announced it has been denied funding by Housing and Urban Development (HUD).
“In a time when our nation is fixated on new ways we can help organizations succeed, consider this: Freedom House helps people fleeing persecution and they place more than 90% of their clients into stable, permanent housing,” said Alex Wright, co-owner of DCFC. “They are incredibly good at what they do, if HUD won’t deem them worthy of our support, let’s do it ourselves. It worked for Keyworth.”
On June 25, 2016, Le Rouge supporters raised $2,000 to benefit Freedom House through a silent auction of commemorative Freedom House jerseys that City players wore in a 5-0 win over Dayton Dynamo at Keyworth Stadium.
The organization offers food and shelter, legal services, medical and mental health care, English as a Second Language, job training, and transitional housing to those seeking asylum in the United States and Canada. Its mission “is to uphold a fundamental American principle, one inscribed on the base of the Statue of Liberty, of providing safety for those ‘yearning to breathe free.’”
Freedom House is the only organization in the United States that provides no-fee comprehensive services to refugees. The majority of residents come from sub-Saharan Africa – especially Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda, and Uganda – Latin America and the Middle East.
Detroit City FC is committed to fostering an inclusive, welcoming environment for people of all backgrounds at Keyworth Stadium.
