Detroit City FC officially wrapped up the 2016 season in grand fashion, defeating Mundo Latino, 4-3, in front of 2,041 supporters on Saturday night.
Jeff Adkins (Butler) tallied twice; Colin Helmrich (IPFW) scored his first for City, and Josh Rogers (Michigan State) scored the eventual match-winner to lead the Old Boys to victory.
Mundo Latino’s Fernando Tapia converted on a questionable penalty call to open the scoring in the 26th minute.
Just five minutes later, Tyler Channell (Saginaw Valley State) played Adkins in behind beautifully. From there, Adkins worked his way around the keeper and smashed it home to tie the score, 1-1.
In the 36th minute, Helmrich calmly nestled the ball into the corner for his first in Rouge and Gold, 2-1 City. Adkins added his second just two minutes later to give Le Rouge the 3-1 lead going into halftime.
Mundo Latino was able to make a game of it in the second half with two more from Tapia in the 68th and 79th minutes.
Four-year captain Josh Rogers scored City’s fourth and eventual match-winning goal in the 74th minute.
