Detroit City Football Club concluded its 2016 season with a 3-1 win over Windsor TFC in front of 6,075 supporters at Keyworth Stadium Wednesday night.
Captain Dave Edwardson got the party started early, giving City the lead before two minutes had been played. The opening goal came so quickly it wasn’t even greeted by the Northern Guard Supporters’ customary smoke-out celebration.
In the 36th minute, Windsor’s Jamar Kelly scored an own goal off a Le Rouge free kick to extend the lead to two.
Tommy Catalano (Oakland), who took home the Black Arrow Award as City’s MVP of 2016, made it 3-0 in the 43rd minute. After poking the ball away from the keeper at the edge of the box, Catalano calmly sent a pass that was well-received by the back of the Windsor net.
Mike Pio scored Windsor’s lone goal in the 50th minute to finish the scoring.
Head coach Ben Pirmann appropriately summed up the 2016 season with one word: “Tremendous.”
“Obviously it had its ups and downs,” he said. “But this club does unbelievable things in the community, whether it’s on the field, in the stands, or in the streets.”
And now the long wait for next summer begins.
