It was a rough trip to the west side of the state as Detroit City FC dropped a decision, 5-2, to Grand Rapids FC in the first-ever meeting of the two clubs Friday night.
City took an early lead on a goal from Jeff Adkins (Butler) in the 12th minute. Dave Edwardson’s 59th minute goal gave the Boys in Rouge new life, narrowing the Grand Rapids lead to just one. While DCFC enjoyed much of the possession, a favorable outcome was not in the cards.
After Adkins’ opening tally, GRFC began to get in behind the DCFC defense with regularity. Two goals in three minutes from Scott Doney gave the home team the lead. Tyler Fischer added a third to make the score 3-1 at halftime.
Joe Broekhuizen extended the Grand Rapids lead in the 67th minute and hammered the nail into the coffin by adding a fifth goal in the 75th minute.
Adkins was named City’s M1 Imaging Center Man of the Match.
Next, Lansing United visits Keyworth for the first time. Kickoff is scheduled for 5 p.m. Sunday evening. Purchase your tickets here while they’re still available.
