The final two games of Detroit City FC’s regular season kick off this weekend. For the first match, Le Rouge host Erie Commodores FC on Friday, July 17, starting at 7:30 p.m at Cass Tech. Then, to close out the weekend, DCFC will make the trip to Pontiac, Mich., for their second game versus the Michigan Stars this year. The Stars and Le Rouge kick off at 7:00 p.m. at Wisner Stadium on Sunday, July 19.
Currently in second place in the National Premier Soccer League (NPSL) Midwest Region standings, DCFC has fallen two points behind the Madison 56ers. However, Madison has only one game remaining, and Le Rouge have two. Mathematically, DCFC controls their own fate. A weekend sweep and six points will secure a top-place finish and a chance to host the regional playoffs for the first time since 2013, and any other outcome means that DCFC’s final standing may depend on a handful of other games around the league.
Friday’s meeting between Erie and Detroit will be the clubs’ first of 2015. The Commodores currently sit in eighth place in the table, coming off a 4-2 loss to Fort Pitt last weekend. Last season, the teams played to a 2-2 draw at Cass Tech on June 6. In 2013, Erie snapped Detroit’s undefeated streak in the conference finals.
The matchup with the Stars is DCFC’s second in just nine days. Saturday, July 11, Le Rouge hosted their in-state opponent in front another record-breaking crowd of 3,884 supporters at Cass Tech. Behind a goal from DCFC captain Josh Rogers (Michigan State), with two more from the M1 Imaging Center Man of the Match and City forward Will Mellors-Blair (Michigan), Le Rouge overpowered the Stars en route to a 3-1 victory. With the brace, Mellors-Blair continued to add to his team-high tally of eight goals in 2015. The Wolverine is now also DCFC’s all-time leading scorer with 13 goals.
Friday’s matchup against the Commodores is the last home NPSL regular season game of the year, don’t miss your chance to see DCFC close in on the Midwest title. Get your tickets online while they’re still available at https://www.detcityfc.com/tickets.
