A 12-day game-less drought finally comes to an end for Detroit City FC. Saturday, June 11, Le Rouge host the Michigan Stars at Cass Tech. The first of two meetings with the Stars is separated by only nine days, and winning both is crucial for DCFC at this point in the season. Kickoff against the Stars is set for 7:30 p.m. The Stars place near the middle of the table at sixth place, but have recently been on the climb and will prove themselves a worthy opponent.
Despite the long wait for Le Rouge, the rest of the National Premier Soccer League (NPSL) saw plenty of action. The Stars come off a 1-0 victory to Lansing United, a favorable outcome for DCFC. Away in East Lansing, the Stars found success where no other team has all year. Its second consecutive loss of the season pinned United down at third place for the time being, but it still has reasonable hopes of making the playoffs. And the Madison 56ers, a team DCFC crushed 5-0, has steadily climbed into second place, also creeping up into the playoff picture.
In Le Rouge’s last outing back on June 28, DCFC fought toward one of the biggest victories of the season, a 1-0 win against Lansing. The triumph, led by a spectacular individual goal from Will Mellors-Blair (Michigan), propelled DCFC to the top of the league. Mellors-Blair’s goal ignited the 3,701 supporters in attendance, a record crowd for Cass Tech. A historic night also saw the presentation of the Rust Belt Derby trophy to the boys in rouge and gold, capping off a wildly successful week.
Le Rouge still has three games left in their schedule, and, mathematically, seven teams are still in contention. As the season enters its final stage, the quest for first place has dwindled away for many teams, but it continues to shine bright for Detroit City FC.
With only a few games left at Cass Tech this year, don’t miss your chance to see Le Rouge in action. Get your tickets for the match as well as the rest of the 2015 home schedule online here.
