Detroit City FC has played just five matches, but it is as if the team has seen it all. Five matches chronicled by strong wins, close losses, and dramatic victories have kicked off what has already been a thrilling 2015 campaign.
The exciting season continues as Le Rouge journey out of the Great Lakes State for the first time this year, making the trek to upstate New York to face FC Buffalo. The Blitzers, as they are known, embarked on the new National Premier Soccer League (NPSL) season in a similar fashion to DCFC, winning at home by a one-goal margin. Buffalo took down the Cincinnati Saints by a score of 2-1 this past weekend.
Le Rouge and the Blitzers kick off at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 23 at Robert E. Rich All-High Stadium. Both teams are currently tied for first in the Midwest Region of the NPSL standings, but DCFC is leading the tiebreaker, having scored more goals. Last year, Le Rouge fell 3-1 to Buffalo toward the end of the season but are looking to carry momentum from Friday’s win into the upcoming Rust Belt Derby contest. If Detroit records a win on Saturday, it will clinch its third-consecutive Rust Belt trophy.
Friday, DCFC went head-to-head with their other Rust Belt rival, AFC Cleveland. An unimaginable finish left a packed Cass Tech stadium of 3,012 supporters breathless. With the score tied 2-2 for nearly the entire second half, a corner kick in the 88th minute taken by Cyrus Saydee (Michigan State) was met by a thunderous header from Seb Harris (Oakland). Harris’ header found the back of the net, and the City fans erupted as Le Rouge sealed the 3-2 victory.
DCFC returns home Friday, May 29 to play the Minnesota Twinstars. Get your tickets for the clubs’ first-ever matchup at Cass Tech and rest of City’s 2015 home matches here.
