Michigan State: The 16th-ranked Spartans (3-1-1 Big Ten, 9-2-2 overall) thrashed Western Michigan, 4-0, on Wednesday before upsetting No. 12 Penn State 2-0 Sunday evening. Kylie Stannard and Ben Pirmann’s squad now sits level with Maryland in second place in the Big Ten with one game in hand. This week, Michigan State pays Oakland a visit on Oct. 22 at 7 p.m. in what will be Detroit City FC night at OU Soccer Field. On Oct. 26, the Spartans will host Northwestern for a 1 p.m. kickoff.
Michigan: In the midst of a break from Big Ten action, the Wolverines suffered a 3-0 defeat at Akron on Tuesday. WIliam Mellors-Blair and Tyler Arnone recorded the only two Michigan shots that were on target, while Colin McAtee and Nick Lewin earned a spot in the starting 11. Michigan (2-1-2 Big Ten, 4-6-2) will host Detroit in a local derby on Oct. 21 at 7:30 p.m. before welcoming Indiana to town on Oct. 26 for a noon game. The latter match will be aired on Big Ten Network.
Saginaw Valley State: The Cardinals lost their first game of the season Friday — a 2-0 loss to Lake Erie — two days before dominating Ohio Dominican in a 4-1 result. Aleksander Isaevski, Craig Neal and Zach Vasold started both matches, and Isaevski recorded an assist off a corner kick in Sunday’s victory. SVSU (8-1-2 GLIAC, 11-1-2) plays two home matches this week. On Oct. 24, the Cardinals host Findlay at 2 p.m. and on Oct. 26 they’ll line up against Tiffin for a noon kickoff.
Butler: Jeff Adkins scored the lone goal in the Bulldogs 1-0 victory over Marquette on Wednesday. In a 0-0 draw against Depaul on Saturday, Adkins led the team with four shots. This week, Butler (1-3-1 Big East, 5-5-4) will travel to Villanova on Oct. 25 for a match slated to start at 1 p.m.
Western Michigan: In Wednesday’s 4-0 loss to Michigan State (see above), Connor Furgason and Sean Hazen were both in the starting lineup. However, the Broncos (1-0-1 MAC, 7-4-3) avenged the lopsided defeat with a win of their own. In a 3-0 result over Northern Illinois on Saturday, Furgason netted the third goal in the 71st minute, as Hazen provided steady play on the back line. Western Michigan hosts Akron on Oct. 25 at 7 p.m.
Oakland: After a disappointing non-conference stretch to start the season, Oakland has rattled off six straight wins. Shawn Lawson scored both goals in a 2-0 victory over Milwaukee, while Raphael Reynolds added an assist and Joey Tinnion earned a spot in the starting 11. The Grizzlies toppled Belmont with another 2-0 result in which Tinnion recorded an assist on the first goal of the game. Oakland (5-0-1 Horizon, 6-5-1) will host Michigan State on Oct. 22 at 7 p.m. (see above) for Detroit City FC night.
Detroit: In the Titans only game this week, they edged out Valparaiso, 1-0, on Wedenesday. Matt Ybarra earned the start in the victory, while Cameron Roberts was listed as a substitute. Detroit (4-1-0 Horizon, 7-4-2) visits Michigan on Oct. 21 for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff (see above) before welcoming Cleveland State to Titan Field on Oct. 25 for a 1 p.m. match.
Coastal Carolina: Bret Mollon’s Chanticleers continue to roll, picking up their seventh consecutive victory after beating Liberty, 2-0, on Saturday. Tuesday’s match that was scheduled at Clemson was postponed until Oct. 21 at 6 p.m in what will be Coastal Carolina’s (4-0-0 Big South, 10-3-0) only game this week.
