Michigan State: The Spartans suffered their first Big Ten loss over the weekend, falling to Ohio State, 3-2, Saturday, Oct. 4 in Columbus, Ohio. Ben Pirmann and Kylie Stannard’s squad (5-2-2) fought hard to mount a comeback, scoring two goals in the second half against the Buckeyes, but ultimately saw its four-game undefeated streak come to an end. Michigan State will enjoy a home stretch this week, facing Akron this Tuesday at 4 p.m. and Wisconsin on Saturday at 2 p.m.
Michigan: After going 0-4-2 in their last six matches, the Wolverines finally tallied their second win of the season – a 3-2 overtime victory – at Wisconsin on Saturday, Oct. 4. Tyler Arnone, William Mellors-Blair, Nick Lewin and Colin McAtee all started. Prior to Saturday’s win, Michigan (2-5-2) fell to Western Michigan, 1-0, in overtime at home on Wednesday, Oct. 1. The Wolverines have a tough week ahead of them, hosting No.1 Notre Dame on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. After, UM will travel to Rutgers in a critical Big Ten matchup Saturday at 7 p.m.
Saginaw Valley State: The Cardinals (8-0-2) kept their undefeated season alive last week, beating Ohio Dominican, 2-1, on Friday, Oct. 3 and playing to a 0-0 draw through overtime against Lake Erie on Sunday, Oct. 5. Craig Neal scored his fifth goal of the season in the victory over Ohio Dominican. In addition, Neal was named the GLIAC Offensive Player of the Week on Sept. 30 for his contributions in the previous weeks, tallying two game-winning goals out of his five goals total. Zach Vasold and Aleksander Isaevski started in both of last week’s matches. SVSU has two home conference matches this week, facing Malone at 3:30 p.m. Friday and Walsh at 2 p.m. Sunday.
Butler: The Bulldogs (4-4-3) suffered their second loss in the Big East at St. John’s on Saturday, Oct. 4, falling 3-2 in overtime. Jeff Adkins earned a start in the loss and recorded one assist in the 89th minute that evened the score at 2-2 and forced overtime. Adkins also tallied three shots on goal. Butler has one game this week – a conference matchup at No. 11 Creighton on Saturday, Oct. 11 at 7 p.m.
Western Michigan: The Broncos (6-3-2) had a productive week on the road, beating Michigan 1-0 in overtime on Saturday, Oct. 1 and playing to a 2-2 overtime draw at IUPUI on Oct. 4. Connor Furgason scored the lone goal in the 96th minute in the Broncos’ victory over UM. Sean Hazen tallied an assist on the game-tying goal against IUPUI in the 65th minute. Furgason and Hazen started in both matches. WMU faces Mid-American Conference opponent Buffalo away on Friday at 7 p.m.
Oakland: It was a solid week for the Grizzlies (2-5-1), capturing two Horizon League Conference wins – a 2-1 overtime win at Detroit on Oct. 1 and a 2-0 victory over Green Bay on Oct. 4. Shawn Lawson tallied the game-tying goal that sent the Grizzlies into overtime with Detroit in the “Metro Series,” while Joey Tinnion scored the second goal in OU’s win at home against Green Bay. Lawson, Tinnion, and Raphael Reynolds started in both matches. The Grizzlies are 2-0-1 in conference action and look to pick up another win this Saturday at Cleveland State.
Detroit: UDM (5-4-1) dropped a 2-1 decision in the first “Metro Series” matchup when it hosted Oakland on Oct. 1; while they came out victorious over UIC on Oct. 4, beating the Flames 2-1 in overtime. Matt Ybarra and Cameron Roberts started in both matches. The Titans will enjoy a week at home against IPFW at 4 p.m. this Tuesday and against Green Bay Saturday at 1 p.m.
Coastal Carolina: No. 25 Coastal Carolina won its first Big South Conference match, 1-0, at Campbell on Oct. 4, with Bret Mollon’s Chanticleers improving to 7-3-0 on the season. This week, CCU plays two conference matches at home, facing Presbyterian Tuesday at 6 p.m., then playing UNC Asheville on Saturday at 1 p.m.
Consulates of Michigan Tournament: Le Rouge players led Team USA to its second tournament Championship over the weekend, defeating Italy, 2-0, in the final on Sunday. The 16-team tournament kicked off Saturday, with USA going 2-1 in its Group A matches against South Korea, Albania and Yemen. On Sunday, USA beat defending champion Iraq, 3-2, in the quarterfinals, and defeated Japan in PKS in the semis. Miche’le Lipari, Josh Rogers, Spencer Thompson, Seb Harris and Colin Helmrich were among the USA players that hoisted the championship trophy Sunday afternoon.
