The Summer of Soccer isn’t over in Detroit just yet. Detroit City FC will return home to Cass Tech High School at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, September 13 for a special benefit match to help grow the beautiful game in the Motor City.
The “DPS Showcase” will feature a full night of soccer in support of the Cass Tech and Detroit Renaissance High School boys soccer programs. It will kick off at 5:30 p.m. with Le Rouge facing Ann Arbor Football Club in a friendly match; then, the Technicians host the Phoenix in a Detroit Public Schools regular-season showdown at 7:30 p.m. CassTech field is located at 2501 2nd Ave, Detroit, MI 48201.
A portion of the proceeds from the soccer doubleheader will be donated to the high school soccer programs, and tickets are only $5. In just three summers, Detroit City Football Club has established itself as Detroit’s soccer team. An exciting 2014 season saw success on and off the pitch for Le Rouge, and as a result of the efforts of DCFC and its supporters, the future is bright for soccer in the city.
With the Showcase, DCFC builds on already strong ties to Cass Tech; on May 23rd, 2014, a day when 3,112 in attendance were treated to a performance by the elite Cass Tech Marching Band at halftime, DCFC presented new uniforms to the Technicians girls soccer team, and the ladies showed their appreciation by joining the songs and chants of the Le Rouge faithful as City went on to defeat Lansing United 1 – 0. Since making the Cass Tech stadium their home, DCFC has invested tens of thousands of dollars into improving the field itself, a benefit not only to the soccer teams but also the football program, one of the finest in the state and D-1 champions in 2011 and 2012.
“There’s no better way to continue developing soccer in Detroit than to bring together thousands of Le Rouge faithful at Cass Tech,” Detroit City FC co-owner Alex Wright said. “We’re excited to see what our supporters have in store for the high schoolers, and we are proud to showcase the passion the Rennaisance and Cass players have for the game and our city. Soccer is extremely popular in the Metro Area, but in the Detroit Public School leagues the sport is still gaining traction. 4 years ago, Cass didn’t even have a boys team, now they do. We like to think we are a part of that. After September 13th, it won’t just be the football team that will be able to say they played under the lights in front of thousands at Cass.”
Beyond the confines of its home pitch, DCFC’s commitment to the sport increases. The team works with the Detroit PAL youth soccer leagues, conducting free clinics and offering free admission to Detroit City games to all participants. DCFC also operates the Detroit City Futbol League, an open, recreational, co-ed league that plays games at Historic Fort Wayne; dedicated to connecting Detroit residents who share a passion for soccer and their neighborhoods, DCFL has involved thousands of players since its inception in 2010. DCFC has recently annouced that for the first time it will be offering a Fall rec-league as well. “DCFC Soktoberfest” begins in early September and is open to anyone, regardless of where they call home.
