Sometimes, getting over the last hump can be the hardest.
For Detroit City FC, that obstacle has been the Indiana Fire — the only team in the Great Lakes West Conference it has has yet to beat during the 2014 campaign. Sunday, June 29, DCFC will host the Fire for the first time all season with the match being set to kick off at 5 p.m.
It will mark City’s first home match since drawing against the Erie Admirals on June 6 as DCFC looks to get back on track after losing 2-0 to Indiana on June 20. The loss marked the first regular season defeat that Detroit City FC has suffered since 2012. With the Fire sitting in first place, directly on top of Le Rouge resting in second, Sunday’s matchup will be pivotal for both sides’ playoff hopes heading into the month of July. Good news for DCFC is that it has six games to play while Indiana has just four, and City is only one point out of first place.
In the first meeting between these two clubs, City earned a 2-2 draw at Indiana on June 1 with all four goals coming in the first half. As the Fire continues to give City fits during Indiana’s inaugural season, revenge will likely be on the minds of DCFC players, coaches, and supporters throughout Sunday evening. A hearty welcome to Cass Technical High School will be necessary.
Being back in the cozy confines of Cass Tech should prove to be beneficial for Detroit City FC, though, as it has yet to lose at home all season. However, something has to give with the Fire riding a three-game unbeaten streak. Indiana hasn’t lost since June 8 when the Michigan Stars toppled Indiana by a 2-1 scoreline. Since that setback, the Fire are 1-2-0, most recently coming off a 1-1 draw against Lansing United.
