The National Premier Soccer League’s 2014 season is now in full swing. Detroit City FC’s path to another regular-season championship and a playoff berth continues this Friday, May 16 when it hosts the Michigan Stars for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff at Cass Tech High School.
Formerly FC Sparta Michigan, the Michigan Stars’ first-ever match will be Friday’s at Le Rouge. Last year, DCFC throttled FC Sparta in both meetings by scores of 5-1 and 4-1. It remains to be seen if a new name can will the Stars to victory or whether City will retain its stranglehold on the in-state battle.
With the new name, the Michigan Stars officially relocated from their old home of Berkley, Mich. to Dearborn, Mich. this season. But Detroit City FC remains comfortable and at home in the heart of downtown Detroit as the premier soccer attraction in Southeast Michigan thanks to undying passion from its thousands of supporters.
The 2,147 City fans attending last Saturday’s (5/10/14) match constituted one of the top attendance marks for a regular season match at Cass Tech. The club is looking to build off this season’s initial success and is highly anticipating another hearty and energetic crowd Friday evening.
On May 10th, Detroit City FC picked up a 1-0 victory — it’s first of the season — over the Cincinnati Saints in the season-opening match for both sides. Zach Myers (Saginaw Valley State) tallied the lone goal that guided Le Rouge to the win off a nice feed from Colin McAtee (Michigan). Meanwhile, Bret Mollon (Temple) recorded his first career shutout in his second season as City’s goalkeeper. David Edwardson’s dominant play in the middle earned him Core Power Man of the Match honors.
