Community owners selected longtime Detroit service organization through annual member-led process
In June, Detroit City FC announced Capuchin Soup Kitchen as the club’s 2026 charity partner. Founded in 1929, Capuchin Soup Kitchen serves people across metro Detroit by providing food, clothing and human-development programs for individuals and families experiencing poverty and other challenging circumstances.
Since 2013, Detroit City FC has selected an annual charity partner through a community-owner-driven process. Each season, community owners nominate potential organizations, with three finalists advancing for consideration. The club’s community owners then vote to select the charity partner, ensuring the initiative remains rooted in the values and priorities of the DCFC community.
Through its programs, Capuchin Soup Kitchen addresses the needs of thousands of families and individuals every day, serving more than 1,000 meals daily. A ministry of the Capuchin Franciscan Province of St. Joseph, the organization is headquartered in Detroit.
“Capuchin Soup Kitchen has spent nearly a century meeting Detroiters with compassion, dignity, and practical support,” said Alex Wright, Co-Founder of DCFC. “Our community owners’ selection of the Capuchins reflects what makes this club special: a shared commitment to our city and to organizations doing essential work for our neighbors.”
Detroit City FC will debut the charity kits at the club’s September 19 match vs Pittsburgh Riverhounds at Keyworth Stadium. The fixture will serve as “Community Partner Recognition Night,” with Capuchin Soup Kitchen representatives on site to share more information about their services, programs, and ways supporters can get involved.
Per tradition, Detroit City FC’s men’s first team will wear a special limited-edition kit inspired by the work of Capuchin Soup Kitchen. The all-green design features a floral motif that pays tribute to the organization’s beautiful Earthworks Urban Farm, which provides sustenance to local individuals in need. Interwoven among the florals is the quote, “It is in giving that we receive,” attributed to St. Francis of Assisi, which underscores the spirit of generosity behind the organization’s mission.
The limited-edition designs are available for purchase online and at the September 19 match. Game-worn jerseys from the match will also be offered through an online auction, with all proceeds benefiting Capuchin Soup Kitchen.
“Detroit City FC’s decision to stand with Capuchin Soup Kitchen is a gift to everyone we serve. This partnership puts our mission in front of a whole new community of supporters, and the artistry of this year’s kit, drawn from our Earthworks Urban Farm, is a beautiful reminder that even something as small as a seed can grow into nourishment for thousands,” said Br. Gary Wegner, OFM Cap, executive director of the Capuchin Soup Kitchen. “We’re grateful to the club’s community owners for choosing us, and we look forward to welcoming DCFC supporters to Community Partner Recognition Night on September 19.”
