Detroit City FC exploded for a 6-2 road win at AFC Ann Arbor, powered by a relentless second-half surge and a breakout attacking performance from a deep Le Rouge frontline.
Detroit City landed the first punch just 10 minutes in, as midfielder Kate Childers opened the scoring off an assist from Drew Martin to give Le Rouge an early 1-0 edge. AFC Ann Arbor responded to level at 1-1 through Ivy Wilhem, and the rest of the half settled into a tense, back-and-forth spell befitting the in-state rivalry and the tight margins that have defined the series this season.
Coming out of the break, Detroit City wasted no time flipping the match on its head with two goals in the first three minutes, both assisted by Lily Jeakle who entered the game at the start of the half. Yuika Nakayama restored the lead at 2-1 in the 46th minute, finishing calmly after a sharp setup from Jeakle. Just two minutes later, Jeakle turned provider again as Martin made it 3-1 in the 48th, capping a lightning-quick spell that seized control for the visitors.
Detroit City continued to press its advantage and was rewarded in the 52nd minute when defender Acadia Murphy added a fourth off a free kick, stretching the lead to 4-1 and putting the match firmly in Le Rouge’s hands. Detroit’s pressure, movement between the lines, and willingness to commit numbers forward kept the hosts pinned back and chasing throughout the half.
Jeakle then added her name to the scoresheet in the 80th minute, tucking away Detroit City’s fifth after an evening spent at the center of nearly every dangerous move in the final third. AFC Ann Arbor pulled one back through Tierra Garniss in the 89th to make it 5-2, but there was still time for one more Detroit exclamation point.
In the final seconds of regulation, midfielder Megan Verant capped the rout with Detroit’s sixth, to close out a 6-2 statement win on the road.
With the victory, Detroit City not only takes another key set of points in the Great Lakes Division race but also underlines its attacking depth, with Nakayama, Martin, Murphy, Jeakle, Verant, and Childers all playing decisive roles over the course of the night.
