Detroit City FC ground out a vital 2-0 road win at Kalamazoo FC, riding late goals from Erin Rasmussen and Abigail Smothers to take all three points in a bruising USL W League clash at Mayor’s Riverfront Stadium.
A humid Wednesday night in Kalamazoo begin with a nearly 90 minute weather delay due to lightning in the area. Kickoff commenced just before 8:30p.m. Le Rouge leaned into their battle-hardened identity, matching a physical Kalamazoo side tackle for tackle in a match that felt every bit like a playoff six-pointer in a crowded Great Lakes Division table. Both sides treated every duel as decisive, producing a tight, tense encounter with few clear chances.
The breakthrough finally arrived in the 81st minute, when Rasmussen stamped her name on the night unleashing a strike that ripped past the goalkeeper and into the net to put Detroit City in front.
Just three minutes later, Smothers pounced to double the advantage, capping a late surge that made it 2-0 to the visitors. Smothers’ strike came at the perfect time, punishing Kalamazoo’s push forward in search of an equalizer and giving Le Rouge the cushion they had worked all night to earn.
The quick-fire brace from Rasmussen and Smothers showcased Detroit City’s ability to stay patient in a cagey, physical match and then strike decisively once the game opened up. With the hosts reeling, Le Rouge managed the remaining minutes professionally, slowing the tempo, winning fouls, and seeing out a statement road victory.
In a division where only a handful of points separate the top sides, this result represents a significant swing in the early playoff race. By taking all three points on the road, Le Rouge not only tightened the table but also climbed into 2nd place in the Great Lakes Division heading into yet another key away date at AFC Ann Arbor, where they will look to build on this hard-fought win in Kalamazoo.
