DETROIT — Detroit City Football Club (DCFC) opened the MASL W League home schedule with a crucial 6-4 victory over FC Berlin on Saturday night. In front of a sold-out crowd at the Detroit City Fieldhouse, the DCFC faithful were treated to an Ania Dow brace and goals from Kayla Addison, Megan Verant, Makenzie Reuber, and Zoe Greenhalge, which put Detroit level on points with FC Berlin in the Great Lakes North division.
It would be a difficult first period for Detroit City, as the visitors from Kitchener, Ontario, would set the tempo, holding a 9-4 shot advantage throughout the first 15 minutes. Detroit did grow into the game, putting more and more pressure on the FC Berlin backline. Detroit City was beginning to take control of the match going into the second period.
Detroit started the second period off with a bang, as just seconds into the restart of play, Megan Verant fed the ball to Kayla Addison, who put it past the FC Berlin keeper to give Detroit the 1-0 lead. For Addison, it’s her third goal of the young season. Megan Verant would pick up a goal of her own just four minutes later, giving Le Rouge a 2-0 advantage. For Verant, it was her fifth goal of the season, and made her the team’s top goalscorer. FC Berlin would pull a goal back halfway through the period, giving DCFC a one-goal advantage going into the halftime break.
In the third period, Detroit City would get a crucial power play when FC Berlin was assessed a bench misconduct penalty. Detroit would take advantage of the opportunity as Mackenzie Reuber would get the ball to Ania Dow, who would get the ball into the back of the net, giving DCFC a 3-1 advantage. This goal would see Detroit break down the game, with the third period all Detroit City. With just over five minutes remaining in the period, Reuber would pick up Detroit’s fourth goal of the evening, and then just three minutes later, Dow would pick up her second goal on the night off of an Elisa Baeron assist, giving Detroit a 5-1 advantage going into the fourth period.
FC Berlin would start taking advantage back in the fourth, as they would get their second goal of the evening just two minutes into the period, shrinking Detroit’s advantage to 5-2. The visitors would put two more past Detroit City in quick succession, giving Detroit a 5-4 advantage going into the final five minutes. Zoe Greenhalge would seal the game for DCFC, picking up her third goal of the season with 2:44 remaining, giving Detroit a 6-4 advantage. Detroit would close out the final minutes, claiming all three points.
Detroit City travels to Columbus, Ohio, next weekend to face off against Columbus Eagles FC. DCFC returns to the Detroit City Fieldhouse on February 7th to face Louisville Triumph FC. All remaining home games have limited tickets still available. Get yours HERE.
