Hamtramck, MI (October 9, 2021) - Detroit City FC played again at Keyworth Stadium this weekend as they hosted Michigan Stars FC.
As the first half progressed, City grew into a nice rhythm with the ball and were able to keep more and more possession. Before long, City had pinned the Stars in their own half, with their striker left as the lone player not defending behind the ball.
#3 Javan Torre continued his nice run of form with plenty of involvement in the match. He frequently connected the backline to the midfield and forwards with a nice range of passing and beating players 1v1.
City had two major chances in the first half. First, after the Star’s keeper vacated the net to clear a ball away, #22 Kevin Venegas sent a lofted ball from the midfield in an attempt to take advantage of the empty goal. However, the Star’s keeper was able to retreat just in time to grab the ball out of the air.
Not long later, Le Rouge unbalanced the Star’s defense, and #10 Cyrus Saydee played a beautiful cross into the back post where #19 Pato Botello Faz was able to send a header back across the face of the goal, but no City player was there to meet the ball. With that, the two sides headed into the locker room for halftime scoreless.
The second half proved to be more effective for the City attack. With the addition of #23 Darwin Espinal on the left side, the attacking player was able to cut inside and cause trouble for the Star’s backline.
In the 57th minute, Espinal beat his marker by spinning when he received the ball and was instantly in behind the defense. After picking his head up for a brief moment, Espinal sent the ball into some empty space in the box where a late-arriving #21 Maxi Rodriguez was there to send his shot into the back of the net and put City up 1-0. From there, City kept control of the ball keeping it from the feet of any Stars players. Despite a few more looks at goal, none would go in but City’s possession and ball-winning defenders were able to see the match out.
Detroit City FC, now 9-2-1 on the season, will head to California for a rematch with 1904 FC. The fixture will take place on Saturday, October 16, 2021, with kickoff set for 9:00 pm ET.
