Hempstead, NY (September 29, 2021) -
Detroit City FC traveled to New York to take on New Amsterdam FC for their second meeting of the season. Going into the match, Le Rouge held a six-point lead at the top of the table.
The Le Rouge offense showed up to this match ready to score early and often. In just the 7th minute, NAFC was called for a penalty on #21 Maxi Rodriguez as he attempted to get a shot away in the box. Rodriguez would be the one to take his penalty and he confidently placed it in the corner of the net to give City their first goal of the match. [VIDEO HERE]
Not long later, #2 Jimmy Filerman threaded a perfectly weighted ball through the NAFC backline for an onrushing #11 Connor Rutz who was able to dribble the ball into the box and beat the keeper to give City an early two-goal lead. [VIDEO HERE]
And then in the 25th minute, a clearance attempt from NAFC fell in front of Filerman who was ready and waiting on top of the box. Filerman struck his foot through the ball cleanly and sent it into the back of the net to finish an incredible goal. [VIDEO HERE]
As the match approached halftime, City was awarded a free kick in the NAFC final third. The ball was sent in by #3 Javan Torre and bounced its way through the box where captain #5 Stephen Carroll jumped to meet the ball, sending it by the NAFC keeper for City’s fourth goal of the half. [VIDEO HERE]
Ten minutes into the second half, Detroit was called for a penalty, and New Amsterdam’s #7 Naeem Charles would score it to cut into City’s commanding lead.
But City would establish the four-goal lead minutes later when the NAFC keeper passed the ball to substitute #23 Darwin Espinal who attacked the goal and punished the keeper for his mistake. [VIDEO HERE]
The Le Rouge offense wouldn’t stop there, however, when in the 86th minute, Espinal and #20 Yazeed Matthews sliced through NAFC’s defense with swift combination play. Espinal dribbled to the touchline drawing out New Amsterdam’s keeper before laying the ball off for Matthews who put City up 6-1.
Detroit City FC, now 8-1-1 on the season, will return to Detroit for a weekend matchup.
On Saturday, October 2, 2021, City will host the Maryland Bobcats with kickoff set for 7:30 pm ET.
