Chattanooga, TN (September 4, 2021) - Detroit City FC visited Finley Stadium in Chattanooga, Tennessee to take on Chattanooga FC for the first time in this fall season.
Each team controlled possession of the ball for stretches of the first half, but it was Detroit who would strike first in the match.
Leading up to halftime in the 42nd minute, #2 Jimmy Filerman sent a teasing cross to the back post where #19 Pato Botello Faz was rose high to meet the ball. Pato finished his chance with confidence to give City the momentum heading into halftime. [VIDEO HERE]
Despite Le Rouge starting positively in the second half, Chattanooga would tie the game up in the 56th minute.
Consequentially, Le Rouge turned on the offensive pressure culminating in a chance in the 63rd minute. A ball was lofted over the top to #11 Connor Rutz who was making a run into the box. #4 Richard Dawson of Chattanooga resorted to taking down Rutz just on top of the box in order to stop the attack and earned a red card for the offense and dissent after the call.
Playing with a man advantage, City was able to take the lead in the 88th minute. Substitute striker #20 Yazeed Matthews lofted the ball up for himself and acrobatically struck the ball into the back of the net to give Le Rouge a late lead heading into stoppage time. [VIDEO HERE]
Chattanooga was able to mount some pressure in the waning minutes, but City’s defense led by #5 Stephen Carroll was up to the task and kept Chattanooga from equalizing.
Detroit City FC, now 4-1-0 in the fall season, will return to Keyworth Stadium to take on New Amsterdam FC on Saturday, September 11 with kickoff set for 7:30 pm ET.
