Hamtramck, MI (August 21, 2021) - Detroit City FC continued their fall NISA campaign in Hamtramck as they hosted 1904 FC who was the only team keeping City from leading the NISA league standings heading into the match.

City’s offense hit the ground running shortly after the first whistle. In just the third minute, #15 Matt Lewis sent a ball up and over the middle of the pitch and #19 Pato Botello-Faz took the ball down in stride. He played #22 Kevin Venegas down the left side. Venegas sent a fizzing ball in front of goal and Pato’s deflected touch ended up at the feet of #11 Connor Rutz right in front of the goal. Rutz calmly got a foot to it and converted his early chance to give Le Rouge a 1-0 lead (GOAL HERE).

After that, City kept up the offensive pressure. The midfield combined often to beat 1904’s pressure and work the ball into the final third.

Eventually the sustained pressure would be enough to break the 1904 defense again in the 22nd minute. #99 George Chomakov started the play with a slide tackle in midfield to win the ball back and play Rutz forward. Rutz carried the ball up and laid it off to #2 Jimmy Filerman who rifled the ball into the back of the net (GOAL HERE).

With City up 2-0, 1904 earned a look at goal after a poked ball through found an onrushing #14 Jerry Desdunes, but City keeper #1 Nate Steinwascher rushed out to meet the attempt and send the effort back into play.

The second half started with 1904 able to control some more of the ball than in the first half, but City maintained their press which would keep 1904 from keeping any sustained possession. When City had the ball themselves they looked to attack early and often. If not for the goalkeeping of 1904’s #99 Austin Rogers, City’s lead would have posed an incredible mountain to climb for the hopeful visitors.

Eventually, City did score a goal to seal the match’s fate. Substitute #23 Darwin Espinal sent in a curling effort from a free-kick, and Rogers who was steady all night, was only able to partially deflect the attempt which wasn’t enough to keep the ball from rolling around the back of the net (GOAL HERE).

Le Rouge, now 2-1-0 in the fall season, sits on top of the NISA table and will head to Seatgeek Stadium in Bridgeview, IL to take on Chicago House AC on Sunday, August 29 with kickoff set for 7:05 pm ET.
