Irvine, CA (August 14, 2021) - Detroit City FC continued their fall NISA campaign in Irvine, California to take on Cal United Strikers FC on the opposition’s home soil. The second matchday of the fall season played out to a draw between the two teams with each side salvaging a point in the NISA table.

Aside from an early Cal United chance, the game started slowly in this match with each team looking to play it long and win loose balls in front of the goal. As the match went on, City controlled possession and much of the half was played with Le Rouge attacking Cal United in their half of the pitch.

The possession wouldn’t immediately result in a positive result however, when 39 minutes in, Cal United sent a low cross into the box and #22 Kevin Venegas attempted to clear it over the goal but didn’t get enough under the ball and it ended up flying past City’s goalkeeper #1 Nate Steinwascher. And with that, Cal United would take the lead into halftime.

Things started equally as slow when the second half was underway. For every three chances City earned, Cal United would earn one look at goal themselves, but neither side could create the final touch needed to earn a goal out of their attacking play.

Overall City continued to be the bigger offensive threat throughout the match and in the 63rd minute, #99 George Chomakov would send a ball into the box from the midfield. The ball would bounce on top of the box, and #2 Jimmy Filerman was alert to finish a close range acrobatic bicycle kick finish to tie the game at 1-1.  The goal was Filerman’s first of the Fall season and 4th of 2021.

The rest of the match would get a bit chippy with neither team playing their best soccer. Turnovers were plenty, as were hopeful long balls and miss hit passes. And despite City throwing numbers forward in the dying minutes, it wasn’t enough to earn a win and three points in the standings.

After ninety minutes of NISA action, the match ended in a 1-1 draw. City led the stat sheet in total shots with 20 compared to Cal United’s 11.

Le Rouge, now 1-1-0 in the fall season, will head back to Keyworth Stadium to face up against 1904 FC on August 21 with kickoff set for 7:30 pm ET.
