HAMTRAMCK, MI (July 28, 2021) - Detroit City FC returned to business in their second NISA Independent Cup on Wednesday at Keyworth Stadium where they faced off against Livonia City FC.
Goals came quickly and frequently to start the match for Le Rouge in this match. In just the second minute, #2 Jimmy Filerman scored a goal with his left foot, sending it bouncing off of the far post and into the back of the net to give City the early lead.
With plenty of offensive pressure following the first goal, City would break through again in the 22nd minute. This time, a ball was sent into #19 Pato Botello Faz whose shot forced a save and a rebound from the Livonia goalkeeper. The ball fell to #20 Yazeed Matthews in the box and the striker put his foot cleanly through the ball to score the second match of the half for Le Rouge.
Again, after sustained offensive momentum from all eleven players on the pitch for City, they would be able to create another goal before the half’s end. The third goal was brilliantly worked by a handful of city players. #22 Kevin Venegas cut in from the right flank to lay the ball off to Matthews, who muscled off a Livonia defender and tapped the ball ahead to attacking midfielder #11 Connor Rutz. Rutz played a one-time pass for Venegas who had continued his run, and through on goal with the ball, calmly slotted it away to give City a comfortable 3-0 lead into the half.
To start the second half, head coach Trevor James sent on three substitutes in #99 George Chomakov, #14 Javi Steinwascher, and #12 Tendai Jirara, making his return to the pitch.
Impressively, the second half would see even more goals than the first for Detroit.
In the 59th minute, Jirara sent in a well-placed cross for Venegas who was there to head it home just before exiting the match. Next, Pato Botello finished a close-range effort to make the score 5-0. But City wouldn’t stop there.
Just minutes later, in the 68th, Matthews beat a Livonia defender in the box and slotted his shot into the goal to make it 6-0. After that, City was awarded a set piece in the 71st and #4 Anthony Manning was able to head home the ball in from #23 Darwin Espinal. In the 82nd minute, #7 Roddy Green found himself with the ball at his feet in the box, and after holding up a Livonia defender and turning with the ball, he was able to smash it into the back of the net.
Up 8-0, Espinal found himself in a dangerous spot on the left side of the box and sent in a clean finish to the far post. And with the ball in the box one more time, Espinal centered it for Matthews who finished the close range effort for his third goal of the match.
In the end, City earned one of their more comfortable victories of the year by the score of 10-0. Detroit City FC continues their NISA Independent Cup action on August 3, 2021, against Cleveland SC. Kickoff is at 7:30 pm ET in Mercy Health Stadium.
