HAMTRAMCK, MI (July 14, 2021) - Detroit City FC opened their account in the NISA Independent Cup on Wednesday at Keyworth Stadium where they faced off against FC Buffalo.

Le Rouge started the NISA Independent Cup hot and fast thanks to an early tap in by #15 Matt Lewis, who wore the captain’s armband in tonight’s match.

After the early goal, City controlled possession of the match for the rest of the first half. While the overall pressure and intensity slowed down for a stretch, City put their foot back on the gas pedal as attacking play ramped back up as halftime approached. With #2 Jimmy Filerman bringing the ball into the box, #20 Yazeed Matthews combined with #10 Cyrus Saydee who laid the ball off for #11 Connor Rutz to hammer home. And just like that, City were up 2-0.

The first half action wouldn’t be quite done though, as FC Buffalo registered a strong shot on goal, which was met by the reaching hands of #13 Armando Quezada.

Just like the first half action ended with Quezada, he would be involved to start the second half. FC Buffalo worked a breakaway opportunity, but Quezada made himself big and met the shot of the attacker to deflect the ball away from goal.

FC Buffalo would stay on the front foot in the early stages of the second half and eventually capitalize on it in the 59th minute. They worked the ball down the right side and proceeded to send it into the box where an unmarked attacker sent it into the back of the net.

With their lead cut in half, City again looked to speed up their play and increase the intensity of their pressure. To aid in this attempt, Trevor James sent on U-23 alumni #43 Keith Larson, who joined the first team squad for this match.

City would add a third goal in the 67th minute, after Filerman earned Le Rouge a corner kick after a nice attacking move in the box. The ensuing corner was sent where only Lewis could reach it, and he headed it into the back of the net with authority to give City a 3-1 lead.

After regaining a comfortable lead, City saw the match out with plenty of more attacking chances. Although none of them converted, Le Rouge won the match comfortably by the scoreline of 3-1.
