HAMTRAMCK, MI (July 10, 2021) - On Saturday night, Detroit City Football Club hosted Lansing United in their 2021 UWS finale.
Looking to improve on a recent run of form, things started well for Le Rouge in this match when they were able to keep Lansing off of the scoreboard deep into the first half, and beyond. The strong defensive start led to increased confidence from City both in possession and in attack. Chance creation for City became more and more frequent, and eventually the pressure was enough to break through.
In the 25th minute, forward #24 Kenna White dribbled the ball down the right side and sent a pass in for #5 Sarah Hugh who was running into the box. Mid-stride, Huge chipped the ball lofting over the Lansing keeper and into the back of the net to give City the lead.
Just before halftime, Le Rouge would strike again. #19 Mami Yamaguchi played an inch perfect through ball to break the Lansing backline, and #27 Melanie Forbes was on the end of it to slot it home and give City a 2-0 lead just before halftime.
City kept up the pressure to begin the second half, and substitutes #28 Cristina Torres and #10 Marlee Taylor were both positive additions to the eleven players looking to increase their lead. And in the 58th minute, Forbes who had dropped into midfield to collect the ball saw a forward run from White, and sent a perfectly placed pass into the final third for White to get on the end of. With work still to be done, White sent a rocket of a shot with her left foot into the net to add a third goal to the scoreboard for City.
Every player from the bench would make their way into the match to see out the second half.
Detroit City Football Club finishes the 2021 UWS season with a 6-4-0 record, good for a third place finish in the UWS Midwest North Conference.
