KENTWOOD, MI (July 2, 2021) - Detroit City Football Club traveled to Kentwood, MI on Saturday to square off against Midwest United who went into the match leading the Midwest North Conference.
Le Rouge was unable to keep Midwest United FC from scoring early in this one after conceding a goal just eight minutes into the game.
After some nerves settled, City grew into the match by gaining more possession as time went on. With the possession came more looks and touches around the opponent's box, but the only chance to cause any danger came in the 38th minute off of the foot of #28 Cristina Torres who dribbled her way into the box to unleash a shot that the Midwest keeper pushed just inches wide of the bar.
Just two minutes into the second half, Midwest would score again. And after going up by two goals, Midwest was content to concede possession to City and try to hold onto their established lead.
Eventually, the low block from Midwest United would be broken down. After enough attempts, a through ball would find its way to the feet of #16 Grace Philpotts who was influential for the Le Rouge attack after entering the match as a second-half substitute. Philpotts was one on one with the opposition keeper and calmly slotted her shot into the back of the net to pull City back within one goal.
Unfortunately, despite the chances City would create in the last minutes of the match, Midwest’s defense was able to keep Le Rouge from equalizing, and the match would finish 2-1 in favor of the home side.
Detroit City Football Club will head back to Keyworth Stadium to take on Lansing United on July 10 at 7:30 pm ET.
