HAMTRAMCK, MI (June 26, 2021) - Detroit City FC returned to action for the first time after a 21 day layoff between matches, taking on Chattanooga FC on Saturday night.
Things started quickly for the Le Rouge offense as they often have this season. In just the 2nd minute, #10 Cyrus Saydee forced a turnover on top of Chattanooga’s box. After the turnover, Saydee dribbled forward and provided the layoff pass to #19 Pato Botello Faz who was there to put City up 1-0 in a matter of minutes.
It didn’t take Trevor James’ side long to find a second goal either. In an 18th minute counterattack, #11 Connor Rutz played #21 Maxi Rodriguez forward, splitting the Chattanooga defensive line. From there, Rodriguez carried the ball down the right side, and with two City players making a run, he opted to find the later run of #2 Jimmy Filerman who sent the ball in the back of the net.
The scoreline would remain 2-0 heading into the second half. For large stretches, City looked potent going forward and Chattanooga struggled to create many chances for themselves.
In the 68th minute, #23 Darwin Espinal and #20 Yazeed Matthews entered the match for Saydee and Botello Faz, who were influential figures in both halves.
In the 79th minute, Chattanooga would breakthrough. After a poorly timed turnover in their own area from City, Chattanooga circulated the ball back to the top of the box and sent in a shot that deflected off of a City defender and rolled into the net.
Shortly after, Chattanooga was awarded a penalty when #1 Nate Steinwascher ran to the edge of his box to make a play on the ball and the attacking player. A collision sent the attacker down and the ref pointed to the spot. The goal wouldn’t convert, however, as Steinwascher dove to his left with a strong pair of hands to parry the shot back into play.
In the waning minutes of the game, Steinwascher would have to come up big again after a corner kick was sent in and the headed ball floated toward the goal. Stenwascher reacted strongly to punch it away.
With the ref blowing his final whistle, City held onto the 2-1 win. The victory clinched the first-place finish and marks an undefeated Spring Season. Detroit City FC continues their season on July 3 at Keyworth Stadium as they will host the NISA Spring Championship at 7:30 p.m.
