HAMTRAMCK, MI (June 5, 2021) - Detroit City FC battled hard in a 0-0 draw in a highly physical game with Stumptown AC.
Detroit City FC opened the game a bit sluggish as passes lacked their customary crispness resulting in an unusually high number of unforced turnovers.
Stumptown AC had a massive chance from these turnovers with a shot near the penalty area in the 4th minute; however, Detroit City star Goalkeeper #1 Nate Steinwasher had other plans, as he made a tremendous diving save to keep the score tied at 0.
While DCFC continued their sloppy, slow play, Stumptown AC was composed in the midfield, and they possessed the ball well for most of the first half while also closing the gaps of open players and forcing the Le Rouge men to make quick decisions.
Detroit City found their groove in the 28th minute by having three quick shots in the box off a free-kick; however, this would be the most action that they would see in the first half.
The game plan was undeniable for Stumptown AC; be physical and win the ball, whether winning the ball cleanly or going through the man to get the ball. At the end of the first half, Stumptown had a total of nine fouls, including one yellow card.
Detroit City FC flipped the switch in the second half as the players cleaned up their passing, possessed the ball, and increased the tempo to make the backline and midfield of Stumptown AC uncomfortable. In this time, #21 Maxi Rodriguez would show his brilliant vision, passing, and foot skills to find open teammates and seek opportunities to pick the defense apart.
The fast tempo would soon end for Detroit City as the game would get more and more chippy and physical as the game went on. In minute 71, #22 Franky Martinez was shown a yellow card, and a scuffle would break out.
This scrum was what DCFC needed to get fired up. For the rest of the game, their pressure reached its peak as they were now causing turnovers and having chances to turn this game on its head.
#7 Roddy Green received a great ball in the 88th min outside the six-box where his strike failed, and the rebound shot was saved. A huge opportunity missed for Le Rouge, but that did not determine the game.
The Google Fi Man of the Match award was given to Goalkeeper Nate Steinwascher for his incredible save in the first half and the leadership displayed while on the pitch.
