HAMTRAMCK, MI (June 2, 2021) - Detroit City FC returned to Keyworth Stadium to face the LA Force after a 3-1-0 road trip led them to the top spot of the NISA table with a 4-1-0 record on the season.
Detroit played strong in the first 45 minutes of action. Trevor James’ side dominated possession of the ball and found plenty of success down either side of the pitch. Despite LA Force attempting to clog the midfield with numbers, City was also able to attack through the center of the pitch at times with quick combination play.
City’s first major chance came in minute 23 after a corner kick came loose in the box. #4 Anthony Manning was the first to it but his effort bounced off the post and up. After an attempted clearance, #5 Stephen Carroll took an attempt but it ended up just wide of the frame.
The next big event for City was on the defensive side of the ball when the LA Force found #87 Diego Barrera through on goal with a ball over the top of Detroit’s defense. During Barerra’s first touch, #1 Nate Steinwascher positioned himself in front of the Force attacker and ate the attempt on goal with his legs to send it back into play and keep the scoreline level.
The play turned physical to end the second half with yellow cards issued to both #13 Juan Pablo Ocegueda and #7 Abraham Villon.
Despite the play not being as pretty as in the first half, the floodgates opened after hard work and smart decisions with the ball. Just two minutes into the second half, #21 Maxi Rodiguez unleashed a shot which was saved, but #19 Pato Botello Faz was there to slot home the rebound.
In the 70th minute after a corner kick, a City counterattack found Pato Botello who was through on goal. Dribbling in the box, the LA keeper took down the City attacker who was booked for a yellow card and penalty kick. Pato Botello was the one to take it and slotted it home to give City an important second goal.
Just six minutes later, City would strike on the counterattack again. This time, #10 Cyrus Saydee found #6 Max Todd with a beautiful outside of the foot pass. One on one with the LA keeper, Todd buried his shot in the far corner to give City a comfortable 3-0 lead that they would hold until the end of the game.
On the season, Le Rouge is now 5-1-0 with a six-point lead for first place in the NISA table having scored 12 goals and only allowed 2. Next up, the Detroit City FC men's team will take on Stumptown AC on Saturday, June 5 in Keyworth Stadium with kickoff at 7:30 pm ET.
