HAMTRAMCK, MI (May 29, 2021) - Detroit City Football Club returned to Keyworth Stadium on Saturday night to take on the Chicago Mustangs in their fourth game of the 2021 UWS campaign.
Both teams came into the match with clear styles of play, and each side was able to implement those in the first half. While Le Rouge has tended to enjoy plenty of possession in their matches so far this season, the Mustangs were able to frustrate the City midfield early on. Often hitting on the counter and with width, the Mustangs had early opportunities to attack. And of course, City’s pressure always stepped up whenever Chicago backed into their own third with the ball in possession.
In the 13th minute, Chicago striker #3 Mallory Olsson found the ball in the box and curled a beautiful shot off the far post and into the net for the first goal of the match. A few minutes later, City earned a free kick in midfield. #40 Tatiana Mason saw a run being made by #29 Madison Woflbauer who was able to get on the end of Mason’s pass and rocket the ball past Chicago’s hopeful defenders and goalkeeper.
As the second half started and progressed, City found a groove offensively and was able to create plenty of chances. If not for the impressive goalkeeper of #1 Anna Karpenko, City would have been enjoying a comfortable lead.
Those saves would prove pivotal in the end as in the 63rd minute, Olsson found herself on goal again and was able to put a powerful finish past City keeper #1 Becca Pryzbylo. And then after much end-to-end action, in the 80th minute, #7 Nina Nicosia dribbled through a slow City defense to the top of the box and placed a clinical finish into the far corner.
Detroit City Football Club, now 3-1-0 in UWS, will continue their season in Muskegon on Saturday, June 5 to play the Muskegon Risers at 7 pm ET.
