HAMTRAMCK, MI (May 15, 2021) - Detroit City Football Club commanded their season opener against the Muskegon Risers Football Club with a 2-1 win at Keyworth Stadium.
Detroit City FC started the game off strong with a high tempo passing and high pressure by all outfield players. The high energy mixed with fast pace allowed Detroit City to have an early shot in the 7th minute; however, that attempt was saved.
Le Rouge continued to control the first half causing the Risers to feel uncomfortable when having the ball resulting in plenty of turnovers and balls forced out of bounds. The Risers attack was stale in the first half as they tallied zero shots on goal.
Detroit City’s strong play throughout the first half allowed captain #5 Sarah Huge to have a breakaway shot that would hit the post and later find midfielder #3 Brooke Honeycutt as she would tap the ball in for the first score of the game.
As the first half winded down, Le Rouge slowed down from their initial high tempo.
After not having much possession up until the second-half kickoff, Muskegon Risers FC opened up the second half with a bang. From outside the 18-yard box and over Goalkeeper #12 Becca Pryzbylo’s shoulder, midfielder #20 Mary Mitchell evened the score with an amazing goal.
This kind of goal could potentially drain a team’s high energy and quick tempo of play, but this wasn’t the case for Detroit City. The conceded goal only turned up their play. After the goal, passes were much sharper and more runs were being made off of the ball, allowing the Le Rouge women to keep even more possession than they had in the first half.
Forward #24 Kenna White found many attacking opportunities as she would find the open seams in the defense and have clear shots; however, all her attempts would be either blocked or saved. White’s constant pressure and shots allowed DCFC to dominate on the ball and again force the Risers into uncomfortable situations defensively.
To go along with White’s strong play, midfielder #10 Marlee Taylor impressed with her control of the ball and her ability to dictate the tempo of the play. Taylor scored the game-winning goal with an incredible volley from outside the 18-box in the 52nd minute to give City the lead. With her impressive play and incredible goal, Taylor would earn the Google Fi Woman of the Match.
After the game, Head Coach Sam Piraine was very pleased with his team's effort. “We purposely applied pressure to start the game,” stated Piraine when discussing their high pressure and face tempo to begin the match.
