CHATTANOOGA, Tennessee - Detroit City FC’s second match of the NISA Legend’s Cup was against the newly created Stumptown AC who were playing in their first-ever professional match.

Kicking off at 12 pm ET as the first of three NISA Legends Cup games for the day, Le Rouge was looking to get their offense clicking after going scoreless in the first match of the tournament. Early on, it looked like that might happen as #7 Roddy Green was putting in good attacking runs down the left flank and sending dangerous balls into the box. Before long, however, Green was down on the sideline and #17 Beni Tanyi was sent on to replace him.

Despite DCFC having plenty of the ball and constantly trying to work it close to goal, Stumptown patiently waited for their moments to hit on the counterattack, only forcing Le Rouge keeper #1 Nate Steinwacher into action once in the first half.

City’s offensive pressure culminated just before halftime when #20 Yazeed Matthews volleyed the ball for himself multiple times in the Stumptown box and ripped a shot on the frame which caused a diving save from the Stumptown goalkeeper.

Coach Trevor James changed things up for the second half with a few tactical substitutions. #10 Cyrus Saydee and #17 Beni Tanyi were subbed off for #19 Pato Botello and #6 Max Todd.

The switches proved to be just what was needed as City’s relentless offensive pressure created an opportunity for Yazeed Matthews to be clear on goal. The striker was able to calmly nestle his shot past the keeper for Le Rouge’s first goal of 2021 and put them up 1-0 in the match. Shortly after, Matthews was subbed off for #14 Javi Steinwascher.

After plenty of defensive work, strong challenges, and scrapping to keep Stumptown off the scoreboard, DCFC newcomer #19 Pato Botello was able to give Le Rouge a welcome insurance goal in the waning minutes of the match.

In the end, City was able to seal the 2-0 victory for their first win of 2021.

City's next match will be Friday, April 16th at 12:00 p.m. EST match against Stumptown Athletic.
