We recently caught up with the 2016 Black Arrow award winner, Tommy Catalano, to reflect on his summer in Rouge & Gold and see how he’s liking his new Detroit Bikes DCFC A-Type. Read the Q&A below for more.
1. First, congratulations on winning the Black Arrow Award. How did it feel to win that?
TC: It was an amazing feeling winning the Black Arrow MVP. When my name was called, I was overwhelmed with emotion and very excited to accept the award. I felt honored and humbled and appreciate the supporters who voted for me.
2. Which goal of yours was your favorite?
TC: My favorite goal was against Dayton when Seb crossed it to me and I had a diving/sliding half volley. I’ve been playing with Seb for many years and it’s great to still be able to connect with him to make great plays. Also, after scoring I enjoy celebrating with our wild and spirited supporters.
3. What’s it like playing in front of City supporters at Keyworth?
TC: It’s unlike anything I’ve ever experienced. I got an adrenaline rush every time I stepped on the field. Seeing and feeling the passion from the fans really inspired me to give 110% every time I put that jersey on. The supporters make it all worth it.
4. How did it feel to contribute so much this season after suffering an injury last season?
TC: The injury last season was unfortunate, but it felt great to be back and healthy for most of this season. I honestly wish I could have contributed more to the away games but my work schedule didn’t allow me to.
5. How would you describe the season for you, personally?
TC: I felt that we were the best team in the league this year even though our record did not reflect that. I am very happy to have contributed so much this season and helped beat my former team the Michigan Bucks. However, I would have traded it all to win our conference and then a national championship.
6. How’s the new DCFC bike from Detroit Bikes treating you?
TC: I am having a blast with my new DCFC bike from Detrot Bikes. I ride my bike at Stoney Creek Metropark with my dogs at least twice a week and get many compliments.
7. You have quite the soccer background, from Oakland to the Bucks to Kitsap Pumas. What is it like playing for Detroit City FC?
TC: Nothing against my former clubs however, Detroit City FC is very special to me. The passionate atmosphere is unlike anything I’ve ever been apart of. I am very grateful for the opportunity to be apart of such an incredible club and hopefully I’m available and healthy for next season.
